Design with others in mind.

Observation on jewelry design by Ron Cravens:

Many times I have heard the comment - "you make so many different kinds of pieces" - then the question that follows - "where do you get the ideas for all the things you make?"

I have no definitive answer to the question. inspiration comes from many sources. but I have a few observations about jewelry design:

first: thoughtful observation to what people are wearing. ask yourself- how can I make something like it yet different enough to be original - be inspired by other peoples work but don't copy it.

second: always be considerate of other peoples tastes. if you make only pieces that you like, you will soon be in a creative rut and your work will become repetitive and mediocre.

third: don't be afraid to experiment but never be insulting or tasteless

fourth: always be considerate of your markets financial situation. a piece of jewelry doesn't have to be elaborate or expensive to be beautiful

fifth: a well designed jewelry piece must be more than just attractive to the eye, it must be functional. it must be able to be worn comfortably without having to do a lot of fussing with it.

sixth: well designed jewelry must adorn the person not the other way around. what does that mean? basically this. the jewelry should not be the whole show. it should draw attention not only to itself but to the person wearing it.

seventh: it shouldn't fall apart under normal conditions. when well designed it will be as rugged as the design allows
